The collaboration between ABS FOOD and Marco Polo Team in support of African communities continues with great commitment. During summer, the team of “In Moto con l’Africa” undertook a trip to Uganda to understand the importance of the bike as a vehicle of support to the Doctors with Africa Cuamm work.
Crossing into Karamoja region and passing through Kampala to the small village of Nakayot, it is clear that motorcycles are the only possible way to face African dirt roads. Potholes and jolts would slow down the journey and are practically impossible to avoid with a four-wheeled vehicle. Efficiency and speed are essential to providing medical care in remote villages. Motorcycles used in Uganda, called “boda boda”, are a simpler and considerably cheaper solution than off-road vehicles and are used for the transport of medicines, vaccines and diagnostic test for malaria, a disease that in Africa remain a leading cause of under-five deaths.
In addition, these motorcycles are equipped with a small emergency kit under the saddle used to help women during childbirth if they are unable to quickly reach a medical facility.
This long-standing partnership guarantees medical and health care among the most disadvantaged rural communities.
